
Starlink Awaits Regulatory Approval in Pakistan
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has shared a crucial update on the progress of Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite internet service, in Pakistan. During a briefing in the National Assembly Standing Committee on IT, chaired by Senator Palwasha Khan, the PTA Chairman revealed that Starlink submitted its license application on February 24, 2022, and is actively engaging with regulatory authorities.
Necessary Registrations Before Launch
Before commencing operations, Starlink is required to register with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) and the Pakistan Software Export Board (PSB). Once these registrations are finalized, PTA will proceed with the necessary licensing process. The chairman emphasized that no shortcuts will be allowed, and Starlink must adhere to the country’s regulatory framework.
Shanghai Space Technology Joins the Race
In addition to Starlink, Shanghai Space Technology is exploring the Pakistani market, potentially boosting internet accessibility and technological advancements. This development promises a competitive landscape for satellite-based internet services in Pakistan.
Musk’s Statement on Starlink in Pakistan
Elon Musk recently responded to a query from a Pakistani social media user, Sanam Jamali, on platform X (formerly Twitter). Sanam urged Musk to launch Starlink in Pakistan, highlighting its potential to transform internet connectivity in underserved areas. Musk replied that he is awaiting approval from the Pakistani government before proceeding.
